India’s most famous boat race — 100-oar snake boats with 100+ rowers racing on Punnamada Lake before 150,000 spectators each August.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held on the second Saturday of August on Punnamada Lake near Alleppey. Over 100-oar snake boats race a 1.5-km course to thunderous percussion and 150,000+ spectators. The trophy was instituted in 1952 by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
