Wayanad
Wild forests, tribal heritage, Edakkal Cave petroglyphs, Chembra Peak and some of Kerala's richest biodiversity.
Overview
Wayanad is Kerala’s most pristine highland district β a vast forested plateau at 700β2,100 metres elevation. Dense forests shelter leopards, tigers, wild elephants and Indian gaurs. The Edakkal Caves contain Stone Age petroglyphs dating back 6,000 years. Chembra Peak (2,100 m), home to a heart-shaped lake near its summit, is Wayanad’s most popular trek.
Coffee, cardamom and pepper plantations carpet the hillsides, and tribal communities β the Kurichiya and Paniya peoples β maintain living traditions that predate recorded history.
