Thrissur is Kerala’s cultural capital — the city of festivals, temples and classical arts. The Vadakkunnathan Temple hosts the legendary Thrissur Pooram each April or May — a 36-hour spectacle of 100 decorated elephants, percussion orchestras and fireworks considered the world’s most spectacular temple festival. The Kerala Kalamandalam (29 km north) is the world’s premier institution for Kathakali.
