Vishu is the Kerala astronomical new year β celebrated when the sun enters Medam (Aries) on April 14. The Vishukkani ritual β viewing auspicious items (gold, flowers, vegetables, a lit lamp and a mirror) as the first sight of the new year β is performed before dawn. Families exchange Vishu Kaineetam (money gifts). Fireworks fill the night sky across Kerala.
